LATEST NEWS!
Well 2004 is over and the Halifax Table Tennis Centre lives to fight another year. Anybody who plays this sport in Halifax should be in awe of the facilities we have on offer at the Centre and I am especially proud to have made a contribution on a small scale to ensure the survival of the project itself.
Running the odd competition here and there is all well and good, but without the tireless efforts of Alan Dickinson and a few others, our Centre simply would not exist and more volunteers are urgently needed in any capacity to keep the place open for business. I remain optimistic in this department but as ever, I will not be holding my breath.
Contrary to popular belief, the Centre does not just tick over from the meagre takings from league matches and practice fees alone. If we relied on this form of income the Centre would have folded years ago.
Things took a turn for the better when the Association was granted Charity status last year. This in theory gives the Centre more of a percentage chance of succeeding where we would previously have missed out on certain grants but this does not mean we can rest on our laurels.
If I told you that Alan Dickinson spends approximately six hours a week applying for grants, sweeps the Centre floor daily, empties the rubbish on a weekly basis and pores over paperwork for various other projects, I am sure many of you would be surprised. Added to this Alan has also painted and decorated the Centre in his own time and recently re-varnished the playing area with Harry Thompson. His dedication and commitment to the Association is unsurpassed and deserves the highest praise. His excellent coaching skills are starting to bear fruit as many of you have no doubt witnessed when coming up against our promising bunch of juniors!
Please bear this in mind when you are next on the premises and make Alan’s job somewhat easier by placing your used cans and wrappers in the bin and covering the tables when play is completed. Every little bit helps as they say.
We are extremely proud
of our Table Tennis Centre which has thrived since its inception in 1994. The
brainchild of the late Mr David Wood, who realised that with the closures of
local engineering firms and similar big businesses in Calderdale, the League
would soon run out of venues in which to carry on our great sport. Youth Clubs
which had previously been a breeding ground for our emerging younger talent also
disappeared in the 80’s, as the modern day world took over in the shape of video
games, computers and other new fangled gizmos that gripped the younger
generation like a magnet.
How ironic then after suffering through all this decline the Halifax Table Tennis League has emerged with better playing conditions than it was ever thought possible, due to the hard work of some of our most treasured members.
The forgiving sprung wooden floor was painstakingly laid in free-time by Harry
Thompson, Mick Mullins, Mick Reddy and the dear late departed brothers Geoff and
Dennis Norburn, often involving hours of work after their regular working shift
had finished. The lighting over the nine individual courts was rigged under the
guidance of our resident electrician Alan Dickinson.

Several grants have been obtained throughout our tenancy and the money has been
put to good use, with the purchase of a Robot Training Aid and nine Joola
tournament standard tables being amongst our most expensive. Individual netting
has been erected between all the courts to provide uninterrupted play at peak
times and the versatility of our moveable barriers is another bonus.
At last we have got local schools involved in our day to day running of the
Centre and we now have a fine squad of juniors coming through the ranks with
several others enjoying the game and making giant strides. Indeed many express
surprise when they see the game played properly at close quarters, having never
realised the actual speed and agility of the real game, previously thought of as
mere ping pong!
Visitors are welcomed with open arms at our Centre and they will find our prices very reasonable. We are a forward thinking committee that are open to any suggestions that can improve our service to the public and parents are encouraged to bring their kids along to join in the fun!
Come and join us you will not be disappointed.
